McGraw Hill: Reinventing Education with Technology

Despite the incredible resilience of educators and parents, many students experienced learning loss due to disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though technology has been bridging this gap for quite a lot, there is still room for improvement, especially in adding value to deliver the right level of education. Incorporating active learning into everyday life with science-themed coloring pages, interactive apps that help build vocabulary skills, and activities that children can do around the home are some of the newly introduced techniques by McGraw Hill to the education sector. McGraw Hill is an American learning company and one of the “big three” educational publishers that provides customized educational content, software, and services for pre-K through postgraduate education. Furthermore, McGraw hill provides reference and trade publications for the medical, business, and engineering professions as well.

The company’s carefully curated social and emotional learning activity bundles—from a team of teachers and learners to the schools and the kids. While every student follows a unique learning journey, there is so much about learning that unites McGraw Hill. The company’s team wanted to create something that reflects those shared moments. “Our Virtual Care Packages each focus on a shared theme in every student’s social and emotional learning path and are designed to support SEL skill practice wherever, whenever. We hope you and your learners discover something new and have some fun while exploring these resources on your ever-changing and winding learning journey together,” explains Simon Allen, CEO, McGraw Hill.

The Being Brave Initiative

Of all the characteristics that make us human, the capacity for courage is perhaps the most admirable—and yet also the most surprising. After all, when a person or team are brave, we take positive action despite uncertainty, risk, and fear. That we can achieve such an incredible feat is a testament to our humanity, and this is something worth celebrating.

Today, in times such as those that everyone is experiencing, every one of usis all calling upon our own courage as we navigate experiences and challenges that are simultaneously unfamiliar and formidable. Uncertainty, risk, and fear seem to lurk in every corner. Fortunately, research on the human brain and how people learn has demonstrated that all people—no matter their age—can demonstrate courage. Moreover, bravery serves as the cornerstone of how humans learn; without courage, people can never take the risk of trying new skills or exploring new ideas.

As such, in honor of all the young learners, McGraw hill have created this bravery care package. Although some of the resources in this package are more tailored for children, and others are more geared toward adults, everything in this package is designed to be used by anyone looking to develop courage. This unique package is intended to serve as a source of inspiration for own courageous ideas and learning experiences.

According to McGraw Hill, Bravery is what adults are achieving every day when they work with children to ensure that their learning never stops, regardless of how or when or where that learning happens. It is what young learners do every day, even as their entire worlds are rapidly transformed. And it is what the McGraw Hill team will continue celebrating as they cheer students on, every courageous step of the way.

The Power of Patience

In the continual effort to enhance the company’s ability to live, work, and grow, McGraw Hill has also developed a package of curated activities, strategies, and empowerment tools. They are designed to help students, friends, and family strengthen their patience at every point of life. Patience brings refreshment and rejuvenation, and the McGraw Hill team know this is sorely needed in today’s world. This one of its kind package from the company is intended to provide every student with the peace and solace they would need to stay the course; manage their valuable time; and live, love, and grow in happiness. “Patience isn’t a cure-all. It’s not a magic wand, and we know it won’t fix every problem. But it gives us the power to do hard things, persevere, take deep, patient breaths, and continue on, even when we feel lost and out of time,” adds Allen.

The Commitment to Education

McGraw Hill was founded in 1888 when James H. McGraw, co-founder of the company, purchased the American Journal of Railway Appliances. He continued to add further publications, eventually establishing The McGraw Publishing Company in 1899. His co-founder, John A. Hill, had also produced several technical and trade publications and in 1902 formed his own business, The Hill Publishing Company. In 1909, the two men agreed upon an alliance and combined the book departments of their publishing companies into The McGraw-Hill Book Company. John Hill served as president, with James McGraw as vice-president. 1917 saw the merger of the remaining parts of each business into The McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc.

Formerly a division of The McGraw Hill Companies (later renamed McGraw Hill Financial, now S&P Global), McGraw-Hill Education was divested and acquired by Apollo Global Management in March 2013. Today, the company operates in about 28 countries, has more than 3,900 employees globally, and offers products and services to over 135 countries in 60+ languages. Based on the growing demand for classroom technology, McGraw Hill began offering digital products alongside traditional print products. This shift has accelerated with an increased focus on developing adaptive learning systems that enable classroom teaching to come closer to a one-to-one student-teacher interaction. These systems allow personalized learning that assesses each student’s skill level and uses data to determine how each can progress through lessons most effectively. McGraw Hill now provides digital products and services to over 11 million users on over 1,500 adaptive products in higher education and digital formats for its major K-12 programs.

Mission and Vision

In the long run, McGraw Hill’s vision is to unlock the full potential of each learner with a sole mission to accelerate learning. The team accomplish this by creating intuitive, engaging, efficient, and effective learning experiences — grounded in research. “We’re helping create a brighter future for students worldwide by applying our deep understanding of how learning happens and how the mind develops. Learning science is the key,” concludes Allen.
