Meta plans to boost its AI development and challenge Google, OpenAI

Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are a few companies now offering large language models and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions to other businesses. Facebook parent company Meta is also investing heavily in AI and now, according to a report, the company CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning to let other enterprises use the company’s AI software. A statement by The Information said that “Zuckerberg and his deputies want other companies to freely use and profit from new artificial intelligence software Meta is developing.”

It added that this decision “could have big implications for other AI developers and businesses that are increasingly adopting it.” Citing a person with direct knowledge of the situation, the report noted that Meta is working on ways to make the next version of its open-source large language models (LLMs) available for commercial use.

LLM is a technology that powers chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Meta’s move will not only offer an alternative to proprietary software sold by rivals Google and OpenAI but also indirectly benefit Meta’s own AI development, the report noted.
