Meta debuted its virtual reality (VR) subscription service for its array of VR-capable devices.

For its subscribers, Meta Quest+ provides free games and extra VR material. The business has declared that it will begin adding two new VR games in August. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, announced the introduction of Meta Quest+ via an Instagram broadcast channel. The cost of the subscription service is $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. Users of the US Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets can currently access the service. The service will soon be accessible for the Quest 3 as well, according to the business.

Members of Meta Quest+ have access to games like Pistol Whip and Pixel Ripped 1995. As long as they are subscribers, users will also have access to these books. For those who don’t know, the Meta Quest line of headsets is renowned for providing an economical virtual reality experience. Meta just revealed their Quest 3 headset with better tracking technology, which will go on sale this autumn.

According to Meta’s website, the flagship VR headset Meta Quest Pro is now available for $999.99, down from its original launch price of $1,499.99, and Quest 2 is being offered for $299.99. In contrast, Apple just entered the virtual reality space with the release of its $3,499 Vision Pro augmented reality headset.

Tech giant Google has reportedly killed its plans for the augmented reality (AR) glasses codenamed ‘Project Iris’. The company unveiled its translation glasses last year, and if the rumor is true, it would mean that those glasses are no more.

This also likely indicates that the versions incorporating transcription and navigation features, which the tech giant had announced to test starting July last year publicly, are no longer in the works, reports ‘The Verge’.

Insider first reported the information that the company has killed its plans for Project Iris. Instead of AR glasses, the company is now focused on software.

The business is creating a “micro XR” platform that may be licensed to other headset producers, much as how Google makes the Android operating system available to a wide range of phone models. The ski goggle-like headgear is still being developed, though, since Google is no longer the only company producing them, according to the source.

Samsung Electronics, Google, and Qualcomm announced their collaboration to create an extended reality (XR) ecosystem in February of this year. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are often referred to as “XR.”

Nvidia fell 4%, Advanced Micro Devices 3.3%, and Intel 0.7%, while futures tracking the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index edged 0.5% lower.

The new restrictions being considered by the Commerce Department would include a ban on the sale of Nvidia’s advanced chip called A800 without a special U.S. export license.

With U.S. antitrust enforcers determined to stop Microsoft (MSFT.O) from buying “Call of Duty” maker Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O), the companies’ two chief executives are expected to testify on Wednesday that the $69 billion deal will be good for gamers and should go forward.

The Federal Trade Commission has asked a judge to temporarily stop the transaction to allow the agency’s in-house judge to decide the case. In the past, the side lost in federal court often conceded and the in-house process was scrapped.

On Wednesday morning, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are also scheduled to testify. Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley will decide on the lawsuit, which is being handled in federal court in San Francisco.

According to the FTC, the deal would provide Microsoft exclusive access to Activision games, leaving Sony Group (6758.T) and Nintendo (7974.T) in the cold. Microsoft has offered to license the popular video game “Call of Duty” to competitors to allay antitrust concerns.

Microsoft has stated that licensing the games to everyone will benefit its financial situation. Many governments have approved the agreement, however, the FTC in the US and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority have challenged it.

Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are a few companies now offering large language models and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions to other businesses. Facebook parent company Meta is also investing heavily in AI and now, according to a report, the company CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning to let other enterprises use the company’s AI software. A statement by The Information said that “Zuckerberg and his deputies want other companies to freely use and profit from new artificial intelligence software Meta is developing.”

It added that this decision “could have big implications for other AI developers and businesses that are increasingly adopting it.” Citing a person with direct knowledge of the situation, the report noted that Meta is working on ways to make the next version of its open-source large language models (LLMs) available for commercial use.

LLM is a technology that powers chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Meta’s move will not only offer an alternative to proprietary software sold by rivals Google and OpenAI but also indirectly benefit Meta’s own AI development, the report noted.

A no-holds-barred battle appears to have broken out over Apple’s Vision Pro. Mark Zuckerberg, founder, and CEO, of Meta, believed that Apple’s recently unveiled mixed-reality headset provided “no magical solutions”. In contrast, tech maverick Elon Musk poked fun at the pricing of the product. Apple in its recently concluded Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) announced its first augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) headset, Vision Pro, for $3,499.

A potential competition to Meta’s Quest and the upcoming Quest 3, Zuckerberg in a companywide meeting said that Vision Pro did not provide any “magical solution” that Meta has not already explored, The Verge reported.

“They went with a higher resolution display, and between that and all the technology they put in there to power it, it costs seven times more and now requires so much energy that you need a battery and a wire attached to it. They made that design trade-off and it might make sense for the cases that they’re going for,” Zuckerberg was quoted as saying in the report. Meta’s Quest is priced at $499, much cheaper than Apple’s Vision Pro. According to reports, the Quest 3 is expected to be priced at $500, which means Meta may manage to garner a market share. In the meeting, Zuckerberg said Meta, so far, has sold tens of millions of Quests.

“I think that their announcement showcases the difference in the values and the vision that our companies bring to this in a way that I think is really important. We innovate to make sure that our products are as accessible and affordable to everyone as possible, and that is a core part of what we do,” he said. While Zuckerberg and Musk may have their view, analysts believe that Apple could still have a winning hand. “While the Vision Pro might not drive significant volumes given its premium price point, it could be the potential catalyst for the AR/VR market as Apple has proven in the past that consumer engagement can deliver willingness to pay premium pricing and Apple’s focus is clearly to hit a home-run on consumer engagement as opposed to volumes with the first device in what admittedly will be a multi-year journey for the platform,” said a JP Morgan report.

Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms (META.O) announced on Wednesday that it will stop publishing news in California if the state implemented laws requiring digital companies to compensate publishers.

Aiming to reverse a loss in the local news industry, the proposed California Journalism Preservation Act would compel “online platforms” to pay a “journalism usage fee” to news providers whose work appears on their services.

The payment system was referred to as a “slush fund” by Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in a tweet, who also said that the measure largely benefited “big, out-of-state media companies under the guise of aiding California publishers.”

Although the firm has been fighting similar battles over paying news publishers at the federal level and in other nations outside of the United States, this was Meta’s first remark, particularly on the California measure.

If the U.S. Congress passes a measure that closely resembled the proposed California legislation, Stone stated in December that Meta would completely remove news from its platform. Along with Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google, which has declared it will delete links to news stories from Canadian search results, the corporation is also threatening to stop publishing news in Canada in reaction to legislation that has been proposed there.

The ideas are comparable to a groundbreaking law that Australia approved in 2021, which also sparked threats to limit service from Facebook and Google. Despite the dispute resulting in a short outage of Facebook news feeds in Australia, both businesses ultimately reached agreements with Australian media companies after proposed changes to the law.

According to a study from the Australian government that was published in December, the measure had generally succeeded. A request for comment regarding the California law from Reuters was not immediately answered by Google.

Elon Musk’s appointment of a new Twitter chief may free up the billionaire from a major distraction and allow him to focus more on Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), analysts said on Friday.

Tesla shares, which have gained 40% this year, reversed course to trade down about 2% as broader markets fell. The stock had its worst year in 2022, losing 65%, amid Musk’s on-again, off-again offer for Twitter.

Musk said on Friday NBCUniversal executive Linda Yaccarino will take over as Twitter’s CEO, as he steps aside to take on the role of chief technology officer at the company.

“Tesla investors are likely to celebrate this move too, with Musk’s very hands-on approach at Twitter leading to concerns he had taken his eye off the ball at this EV giant,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Sophie Lund-Yates said.

Ever since Musk bought Twitter in a $44 billion deal, Tesla investors have been worried that he may not be able to pay full attention to the company, which is in a price war with upstarts and legacy automakers.

“This is a fractional positive for Tesla shareholders because he will likely spend a little bit more time on Tesla,” said Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management. “However, there are other things that are competing for his time.”

Although Twitter has taken much of Musk’s time since its takeover, he still actively manages several other businesses such as SpaceX and Neuralink. Musk recently formed an AI company called TruthGPT to take on OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Bard.

Musk’s involvement with Twitter has been quite chaotic. He has slashed thousands of jobs at the social media company, fired its top executive team, including its CEO, and has made many changes to its policies and strategy to rely less on ads and more on subscription money.

OpenSync unleashed a slew of announcements including this – perhaps the most important: The OpenSync framework now includes support for Linux SDN. The Linux networking bridge is one of the world’s most widely supported network software stacks, which means the move will extend the reach of the OpenSync open-source framework to 100% of new or recent intelligent home devices, says Sandeep Rai, VP of Software at OpenSync.

“The Linux networking bridge is widely used and adopted by consumer premises equipment makers, service providers, and software developers. It is used to create, launch, and manage consumer services from the Cloud. We’re delighted to announce that with Linux SDN support, we now have a solution that covers 100% of the market for new or newer CPEs,” Sandeep Rai says.

Until now OpenSync has relied on Open vSwitch (OVS) to provide Cloud-programmable SDN functionality. The issue has been that converting from the Linux bridge to OVS can require additional development effort. All of this is now no longer needed, Sandeep Rai says.

“The new Linux SDN feature of OpenSync reduces the complexity and effort required during integration, leading to easier and broader adoption. The Linux SDN feature can now be used with the Linux network bridge. Meanwhile, support for OVS will continue thus providing developers with an option to choose the one that suits individual OEM or service provider needs,” says Sandeep Rai.

Linux SDN support will be available soon as part of the OpenSync 5 pre-release. OpenSync 5 general availability is slated for September this year, the organization says.
